Viking Style Scale Skirt with Belt (1mm Steel) – Lord of Battles
This scale skirt is the ideal addition to your Viking armour, whether you're preparing for a historical battle, a LARP adventure, or a themed cosplay event. It perfectly complements a scale cuirass and shoulder pieces, allowing you to create comprehensive body protection. Thanks to its universal size and adjustable belt, it will fit most adult warriors. Two separate skirt panels ensure good leg mobility, while the sturdy scales (measuring approx. 6 x 4 cm each) protect your thighs and knees from blows. The skirt is worn suspended from the belt, covering the sides of the legs from the waist down to over the knees.
Historical Context
Although the first scale armours have their roots in antiquity, long before the Viking Age, they have become a popular element for portraying Nordic warriors in modern reenactment and fantasy. Historically, scale constructions protected warriors in many cultures around the world. A skirt of this type would have provided protection for the lower torso and upper legs, which were vulnerable areas, especially in close combat. Metal scales, riveted to leather or fabric, offered a good balance between protection and mobility.
An Interesting Historical Tidbit
Did you know that while archaeological finds of purely Viking-era scale skirts are rare, the principle of scale protection was so universal and effective that it appeared in various forms across many cultures and centuries? It is this versatility and visual appeal that make scale elements a popular choice for portraying tough Nordic warriors, even though we more often find evidence of their use of mail or lamellar armour.
Caring for Your New Piece of Armour
To ensure your scale skirt looks great and lasts for a long time, give it the appropriate care. Regularly inspect the steel scales (made from 1mm iron sheet) and, after use, especially in damp conditions, dry them and lightly oil them with a conservation oil to prevent rust. Treat the leather parts (the cowhide backing, as well as the buffalo leather belt and main skirt body) with leather care products to keep them supple and prevent cracking. Store it in a dry place.
