Steel Plate Spaulders with Scales (Pair) – Byzantine Style for Reenactment & LARP

The core of each spaulder is a main shoulder plate of 1.2mm thick steel, covering the vulnerable shoulder joint. This is securely riveted onto a backing of robust cowhide leather, which helps distribute weight and increases comfort. Precision-riveted onto this leather layer are 22 convex steel scales (1.0mm thick), which overlap elegantly in rows to effectively protect your upper arm while allowing for movement. The main plate measures approximately 35.5 x 28 cm (14 x 11 inches when laid flat), providing generous coverage. The combination of gleaming, convex scales and the solid shoulder plate creates an imposing and authentic appearance, reminiscent of the armour worn by Byzantine elite units. For comfortable and secure fastening, leather straps are riveted to the top (for easy lacing to a gambeson, gorget, or cuirass), and a lower leather strap features a solid brass buckle for a snug fit around the upper arm. This ensures the spaulders sit perfectly and follow your movements without flapping.

Who Wore Scale and Combined Armour?

Scale armour (Latin: lorica squamata) has ancient origins (e.g., Scythians and Romans) and remained extremely popular for centuries, particularly in the Roman and subsequent Byzantine Empires, as well as in Asia and Persia. It was valued for its relatively good flexibility combined with excellent protection against cuts and thrusts – the overlapping metal scales riveted to a backing were highly resistant. Combining large plates (on shoulders or chest) with scales was also common practice, offering even greater protection to key areas while maintaining flexibility. Armour like this was worn by Byzantine cataphracts (heavy cavalry), elite infantry, and officers during military campaigns, on guard duty in Constantinople, or during ceremonial parades of the Imperial Guard.

How Can You Use These Spaulders Today?

This pair of spaulders is an excellent choice for:

  • Reenactment: Ideal for reconstructing a Byzantine or Late Roman warrior, but also suitable for other characters using scale or combined armour.
  • LARP: Perfect for knights, paladins, captains of the guard, or any character requiring robust and visually striking armour with an Eastern or Classical feel.
  • Theatre and Film: An authentic and visually impressive accessory for historical costumes.
  • Cosplay: A superb foundation for creating unique fantasy or historical characters with attention to detail.
  • Exhibitions and Collections: An imposing example of combined plate-and-scale armour and skilled craftsmanship.

A Historical Tidbit

Did you know that Byzantine armies were renowned for their sophisticated and often highly decorated armour? Scale and lamellar armours (kremasmata, klibanion) were frequently complemented by crested helmets, decorated gorgets, and quilted kaftans (kavadion or zostarion). This created an imposing visual spectacle designed not only to defeat the enemy but also to inspire awe and demonstrate the wealth and power of the Empire.

How to Care For Your Spaulders

To keep your combined plate-and-scale spaulders the pride of your kit:

  1. Keep Dry: The steel parts (plate and scales) are prone to rust. Always dry them carefully with a soft cloth after use.
  2. Metal Preservation: Regularly treat all steel surfaces (ideally after every wear in damp conditions or before long-term storage) with a thin layer of conservation oil (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol, gun oil) to prevent rusting. Apply with a cloth and wipe off any excess thoroughly to avoid staining clothing or leather parts.
  3. Leather Care: Keep the leather backing and straps clean and dry. Avoid soaking. Occasionally, you can treat them with a suitable colourless product for smooth leather (conditioner, balm) to keep them supple and prevent cracking.
  4. Brass Buckle: If the buckle tarnishes, it can be polished with a soft cloth and a brass cleaning agent (e.g., Brasso).
  5. Storage: Store in a dry, well-ventilated place, preferably hanging or laid flat to prevent distortion and moisture build-up.
