Forged Early Medieval Viking Bearded Axe with Carved Runes

Construction and Historical Heritage of the Weapon

With its shape featuring an extended lower part of the blade, this weapon is classified as a so-called bearded axe (skeggöx), which was immensely popular throughout Scandinavia and the British Isles. The "beard" on the blade allowed the warrior to effectively hook an enemy's shield, exposing the opponent for a deadly strike, while the weapon remained relatively lightweight due to the cut-out material. The shaft is crafted from natural wood and its surface is decorated with an inscription carved in runes, which held a strong magical and protective significance for the old Norsemen. An interesting feature is the cross-binding of leather straps directly at the axe head, which historically served to fix the head in place and protect the shaft from being severed.

Safety Warnings and Intended Use

For safety reasons, we must strongly warn you: this axe is under no circumstances intended for contact Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA, buhurt), stage combat, or LARP battles! The manufacturer did not design it as a full-contact weapon; clashing it against other steel could result in the edge chipping or the head coming loose, which would lead to serious injury. Likewise, it is not a working tool for chopping firewood. The weapon is primarily designed as a stunning decorative piece, a luxurious costume accessory, and a tool for solo technique practice (shadow fighting) into the air.

Maintenance and Care of Materials

Since the axe blade is forged from carbon steel, it is naturally susceptible to corrosion. After every use, especially in a damp outdoor environment, it is absolutely essential to wipe the steel surface completely dry and preserve it with a thin layer of gun or linseed oil. We also recommend occasionally treating the wooden shaft featuring the carved runes with linseed oil, which will prevent the wood from drying out and cracking. Keep the leather wrapping, located at the bottom and top of the grip area, supple using a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax.

Recommended Accessories

To complement this stylish Viking axe, we highly recommend purchasing a quality historical leather belt with a massive buckle, as well as a traditional leather axe frog in the shape of a steel ring, into which the axe will perfectly fit, allowing you to carry it safely on all your expeditions.
