One-Handed Viking Axe for Reenactment, Ash Handle
Appearance and Construction
The axe head features the typical shape with a flared blade, inspired by historical axes from the Viking Age. Its dimensions are approximately 16.5 x 15.7 cm (6.5 x 6.2 inches). The entire head is treated with black lacquer for protection and an authentic look, except for an approx. 10 mm (0.4 inches) wide polished edge bevel which shows the silvery steel colour. The axe blade is made of mild steel and has a thickness of about 5.5 mm (0.22 inches). An important feature for reenactment is the thickness of the striking edge, which is approx. 1.6 mm (0.06 inches) – meaning the axe is blunt for safer use during simulated combat (stage combat).
The handle, made from quality ash wood, measures around 58.5 cm (23 inches). Ash is known for its strength and flexibility, making it an ideal material for axe handles. It has an interesting teardrop cross-section (wider end near the head 36x28 mm / 1.4x1.1 in, narrower end at the grip 20x31 mm / 0.8x1.2 in), with the point of the "teardrop" facing forward towards the edge. This aids correct axe orientation in the hand and provides a firm grip. The axe head is securely fixed into the handle using an iron rivet, peened on both sides for maximum reliability.
This is a quality product from House of Warfare. The stated dimensions may vary slightly from piece to piece due to handcrafting.
Using the Axe
Reenactment and Stage Combat
Thanks to its blunt striking edge (approx. 1.6 mm) and robust construction from mild steel, this axe is primarily intended for historical reenactment and combat practice. You can safely use it at events where blunt weapons are required. Its weight and balance correspond to one-handed battle axes.
Costume Accessory and LARP
The axe serves excellently as an authentic accessory for your Viking costume, early medieval warrior outfit, or LARP character. Its appearance enhances the historical atmosphere of your persona.
Note: Due to the blunt edge and the material used (mild steel), this axe is not intended for regular wood chopping or other practical work tasks.
Axes in the Viking Age
For the Vikings (approx. 8th - 11th centuries), the axe was one of the most common and versatile tools and weapons. Unlike swords, which were more expensive and affordable only for wealthier warriors, the axe was a standard part of almost every man's equipment. It was used not only in battle but also in daily activities – felling trees, working wood, building ships and houses.
Battle axes often differed from working axes in the shape of the head (e.g., longer, thinner "bearded" axes – skeggøx – allowing for better hooking of shields or opponents) and the length of the handle. There were both one-handed versions and formidable two-handed Dane axes, the feared weapons of elite warriors like the Varangian Guard in Byzantium.
Interesting Historical Fact
Axes played such a significant role that they appear frequently in Norse mythology and sagas. They were symbols of strength and status. Archaeological finds from Viking graves often include axes, ranging from simple tools to ornately decorated battle axes, testifying to their importance in the life and death of the people of that era.
Axe Care
To ensure your axe serves you well for a long time and maintains its appearance:
- Metal Head: Dry it after each use, especially in damp conditions. Regularly treat it with a thin layer of oil (e.g., gun oil, but mineral or even vegetable oil will suffice) to prevent the mild steel from rusting. The black paint protects most of the surface, but the edge and any scratches are prone to rust.
- Wooden Handle: Occasionally wipe the handle with boiled linseed oil or wood wax. This protects it from moisture and drying out and enhances the wood grain.
- Storage: Store the axe in a dry environment.
- Inspection: Before each use, check that the head is firmly seated on the handle.
Safe Handling
Even though this axe is blunt and intended for reenactment, it is still an object that can cause injury. Always follow these guidelines:
- Prioritize your safety and the safety of others when handling and practicing combat.
- Maintain a safe distance from other people.
- Always wear the prescribed protective gear during reenactment events.
- Always check the condition of the axe before use, especially the tightness of the head and the integrity of the handle.
- Do not use the axe for purposes it is not designed for (e.g., chopping hard materials).
