Viking axes

Technically the ax was equipment that was simple to manufacture. Its use was more versatile. While in the early Iron Age the finds of axes in Norwegian graves are rare, they come into the graves of the Viking Age before as many times as swords and spears. The ax has apparently experienced in the Viking era a renaissance. There are several distinctive types of Vikings axes, most of them you can find in this section.

The Viking ax was less suitable for work. Its blade was often quite thin, but richly decorated with carvings and inlaid silver decoration, like the famous Axe Mammen. However, it is questionable whether all these axes were used in combats and battles. Mostly a cutting edge from special hard steel was welded onto the ax head.
