Haunild 15th Century Hand-and-a-Half Sword
Sword class B
Design and Oakeshott Typology
At first glance, the Haunild sword captivates with its harmonious proportions and distinct hilt features. Its total length is approximately 122 cm.
The Blade
The straight, double-edged 91 cm blade tapers smoothly to a point, making it effective for both powerful cuts and precise thrusts. Its shape is closely related to the Oakeshott Type XVIIIa. A wide and long central fuller, measuring 61 cm, lightens the blade and improves its balance without compromising its strength.
The Hilt (Guard, Grip, and Pommel)
The 22 cm wide steel guard corresponds to Oakeshott Style 7—its arms are sharply curved towards the blade, providing excellent hand protection. The long grip (20.5 cm) allows for a comfortable one or two-handed hold. Its wooden core is covered with quality leather and reinforced with a spiral wire wrap, ensuring a secure grip even while wearing gloves. The impressive ensemble is completed by a massive steel "fishtail" pommel, classified as Oakeshott Type V, which perfectly balances the sword. The point of balance is located a mere 3 cm from the guard, guaranteeing superb maneuverability.
Use in History and Today
Historical Context
Longswords of this type were the universal weapon of knights and professional warriors in the 15th century. They were carried both on the battlefield and for personal defense. Their design was optimized for combat against various types of armor, from mail to full plate, where a precise and strong thrust was essential. It's interesting to note that the "fishtail" pommel became highly popular throughout Europe specifically during the 15th century.
