Appearance and construction:
The sword's characteristic silhouette is striking at first glance. The straight, double-edged blade, forged from spring steel CSN 14260 (oil-hardened to approx. 47 HRC), tapers evenly and has a distinctive fuller to reduce weight. The dominant feature is the broad steel cross guard (approx. 22.5 cm), the arms of which bend elegantly and distinctly towards the blade. The handle is carefully crafted – the base is a steel blade tang, which is lined with wood and then firmly wrapped in high-quality cowhide leather that provides a comfortable and secure grip. The overall impression is enhanced by the steel pommel, with its intricate, multi-faceted shape, which perfectly balances the sword.
Historical classification:
The overall design of the Severon sword – the shape of the blade, the distinctly curved cross guard and the faceted pommel – is indicative of swords from the High to Late Middle Ages (approximately 1300s to 1500s). According to Oakeshotts typology, the blade can be categorised as type XII or XIIa (characterised by their tapering and the presence of a fuller). The pronounced curved cross guard corresponds to style 7 and the complex pommel falls under type T3. This combination of elements gives the Severon sword a distinctive and historically credible look.
Variants and uses:
The Severon sword is available in two variants:
- A sharp variant, ideal for collectors, as an appealing decorative element or for safely practising cutting techniques on suitable materials.
- A blunt variant (class B). Its parameters and durability (B classification) make it suitable for more demanding applications.
Safety and maintenance:
Remember that the sword is a weapon and requires responsible handling.
- Use of the sword is at your own risk. The manufacturer is not responsible for any damage or injury.
- Keep the sword out of the reach of children.
- The blade is made of carbon steel CSN 14260, which is not corrosion resistant. Clean and dry it thoroughly after each use and then apply a thin layer of preservative oil.
- When practising fencing, you should cover your blows with the flat side of the blade, not the edge, to avoid excessive wear and damage. Fence with technique and without unnecessary force.
- Check the condition of the sword before each use, especially the durability of all parts (blade, cross guard, pommel) and any bumps or sharp spots on the blunt blade (these should be ground down).
- With active use, the cross guard or pommel may gradually loosen, which is common for contact swords and requires professional maintenance (tightening, re-riveting, re-soldering).
The Severon one-handed sword is a reliable tool and an aesthetically pleasing piece that combines Czech quality and the spirit of medieval weapons. It is sure to make you happy, whether as part of your equipment or as the centrepiece of your collection.
