Appearance and Construction: Classic Design by Pavel Leier

The "Johannes" sword impresses at first glance with its classic medieval design, its proportions and craftsmanship bearing the mark of Master Leier. The straight, double-edged blade, 79 cm in length, is crafted from high-quality ČSN 14260 spring steel. It features a distinct 50 cm long fuller that extends over a substantial part of its length, reducing weight while maintaining strength. The blade tapers smoothly to a point.

The robust steel guard is straight, 22.5 cm long, and its ends flare slightly, providing good hand protection. The 14.5 cm grip (hilt) consists of the blade's steel tang, overlaid with wood and wrapped with durable cowhide leather and a twisted pair of wires for a more secure hold. The ensemble is completed by an elegant, faceted steel pommel in a pear shape with a diameter of 5.3 cm, which balances the sword and securely finishes the grip. The sword's overall length is 102 cm, and its weight is 2096 g.

Historical Classification: A High Medieval Knightly Sword

With its blade shape, the type of straight guard with slightly flared ends (similar to Oakeshott Style 6), and the faceted pear-shaped pommel (reminiscent of Oakeshott Type J or K), the "Johannes" sword ranks among the typical one-handed knightly swords common during the High Middle Ages (approx. 12th–14th centuries). It can be compared to the Oakeshott Type XIIa, a popular and versatile combat sword of its time.

Material and Craftsmanship: Quality from a Master's Hand

The blade is crafted from proven ČSN 14260 spring steel, which Pavel Leier often uses for his weapons. The steel is oil-hardened to a hardness of approximately 47 HRC and subsequently tempered, ensuring optimal performance characteristics. It is important to know that this steel is not stainless and requires regular maintenance (cleaning and oiling). The pommel and guard are also steel (cast), meticulously finished to their final form.

Variants and Usage: From Collector's Item to HEMA Sword

You can order this sword in two variants:

  • Sharp Version: Suitable for collection purposes, display, or cutting tests (tameshigiri) – extreme caution is necessary here!
  • Blunt Version (Class B): Specially adapted for historical and stage combat. The blade edge has a thickness of 2-3 mm, and the tip is safely rounded. This variant is ideal for contact fencing, technique practice, HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts), LARP, or as part of a costume for re-enactment events or theatrical performances. For the blunt version, the sword's point of balance is approximately 4.5 cm from the guard, contributing to its good handling.

Safety Guidelines and Care for Your Knightly Sword

Always keep your safety and the safety of your surroundings in mind when using the sword.

  • You use it at your own risk. We are not liable for injuries or damages resulting from its use.
  • Train your technique: Execute cuts with proper form, without excessive force. Try to parry opponent's strikes with the flat of the blade, not edge-on-edge, to minimize nicks and the risk of damage.
  • Regular inspection: Check the sword before each use. File down any nicks or sharp spots on the blade's edge (resulting from normal wear and tear during fencing) with a diamond file or sandpaper. This wear and tear is not a reason for a warranty claim.
  • Maintenance: Since the steel is not stainless, clean the blade after each use (especially after contact with bare hands) and conserve it with weapon oil to prevent corrosion.
  • Possible loosening: Over time, the guard may become slightly loose. This is common with contact swords and can be addressed by re-peening, tightening the pommel, repairing a soldered joint, or temporarily by wrapping the gap with strong fishing line.
  • Storage: Keep the sword out of reach of children!

Warranty for Your Hand-Forged Sword

We provide a statutory 2-year warranty from the date of purchase for proven material defects. The warranty does not cover blade breakage or other damage resulting from improper handling or normal wear and tear from fencing.

This sword from Pavel Leier's workshop is an excellent choice for any history, fencing, or re-enactment enthusiast seeking a functional, aesthetically pleasing, and historically faithful piece of equipment bearing the hallmark of Czech quality and blacksmithing artistry. Acquire a quality piece of history for your activities!
