Feast of the Wanderer: 4-Piece Hand-Forged Mild Steel Cutlery Set

Practical Use and Contents

The set contains everything a modern adventurer in historical attire needs for sustenance. Each piece is unique due to the manual forging process:

  • Knife: Featuring a sharp blade that handles meat and bread with ease.
  • Spoon: Deep enough for hearty stews, porridges, and pottage.
  • Fork: A classic two-tined design, ideal for spearing pieces of roast.
  • Eating Spike (Pricker): A traditional tool that often replaced the fork in history or served to hold food steady while cutting.

A Glimpse into History

In the Middle Ages, it was not customary for a host to provide guests with a full set of cutlery as we know it today. Every traveller, soldier, or citizen carried their own knife and often a spoon in a sheath on their belt. The two-tined fork only gained popularity in Europe much later and was initially considered an unnecessary luxury. The eating spike, or pricker, was a universal instrument for centuries, used to spear food and bring it to the mouth. This set thus represents an ideal cross-section of dining culture from the High Middle Ages to the Early Modern period.

Care and Maintenance for Steel and Leather

Since the cutlery is made from mild steel (it is not stainless), it requires your care to serve you for many years:

  • After each use, wash the cutlery thoroughly with lukewarm water and dry immediately with a soft cloth.
  • Never leave the cutlery wet or in a damp environment, as rust will form quickly.
  • Before storing in the pouch, rub the steel parts with a thin layer of vegetable oil or food-grade grease.
  • Never wash the cutlery in a dishwasher and avoid aggressive chemical cleaners.
  • Treat the leather pouch occasionally with leather balm or beeswax to keep it supple and prevent cracking.

Important Notice

This is a fully functional replica of a historical-style cutlery set, produced in small quantities using traditional methods. For legal reasons, we must inform you that this is a decorative item and is not certified for direct contact with food. Exercise caution when handling the knife and spike, as the points are sharp and may cause injury if used carelessly.

A wooden bowl or a ceramic tankard from our range would perfectly complement this set, bringing your historical dining experience to perfection.
