Medieval Buckle Shoes “Northerner” – Dordrecht Type (14th C.)
Unique Fastening System from Dordrecht
This model is based on a specific historical find (classified as Type 30, variant 1a) from excavations in Dordrecht, where over 200 types of medieval footwear were discovered. The main distinguishing feature is the split fastening with a pull-strap. A leather strip wraps around the ankle and is secured with a brass buckle on the side. This solution is not only visually attractive but above all practical – you can put the shoe on quickly, and the strap provides surprisingly good ankle support, which you will appreciate when moving in uneven terrain.
Quality and Construction
The boots are made of quality natural cowhide. The sole construction is historically faithful – it is a leather sole attached to the upper with sturdy steel nails around the perimeter. This method ensures high durability and allows for easier repair by a cobbler once the sole wears down over time.

Safety Warning
The boots have a leather sole. Although the perimeter nails provide slight traction on dirt, the boots can be slippery on smooth modern surfaces (tiles, parquet, concrete). For frequent wear in the city or on hard surfaces, we recommend having the sole rubberized, which will significantly extend the life of the footwear and increase your safety.
Care for Leather Footwear
Leather is a natural material that "breathes" and moves. It may show small colour variations or scars, which is proof of authenticity. To make your boots last a long time:
- Clean dirt from the boots with a damp cloth after every use.
- Regularly apply leather grease or beeswax balm to keep the leather soft and water-resistant.
- Never dry the boots near a radiator or open fire – the leather would harden and crack. Dry them slowly, stuffed with newspaper.
