Suanthos Hand-and-a-Half Sword – 14th Century Style Training Weapon

Durable Construction and Historical Context

Typologically, this sword fits into the family of so-called "Bastard swords" (according to Oakeshott, it could be classified as Type XIIa or XIIIa). The blade is hand-forged from high-quality 1060 carbon steel. To ensure safety during contact, the striking edge is approx. 2 mm (0.08 in) thick and the point is safely rounded. This makes the sword a visually faithful, yet "blunt" replica.

The hilt is long enough for you to grip comfortably with both hands, allowing you to utilise leverage techniques typical of the German or Italian schools of fencing. The wooden grip is covered in black leather for a secure hold and is finished with a massive wheel pommel that counterbalances the heavier blade. The crossguard is simple and straight, corresponding to the austere military aesthetic of medieval battlefields.

Important Usage Warning

Although the manufacturer declares this sword as suitable for fencing, due to its weight (approx. 1850 g / 4.1 lbs) and rigid construction, we sell it in our e-shop in the decorative replica category. This means we do not provide a warranty against blade breakage or loosening of the crossguard caused by full-contact combat. If you decide to use the sword for air drills, technique practice, or light contact, you do so at your own risk. Given its higher weight, the sword is more suitable for strong fencers or as a training aid for improving physical conditioning.

Sword Care

Since the blade is made of carbon steel, it is susceptible to corrosion (rust). To keep your sword looking like new for a long time, please follow these rules:

  • Store the sword in a dry place, not in a damp cellar or a wet scabbard.
  • Wipe the blade with a cloth and oil it after every contact with bare hands (WD-40 or gun oil is suitable).
  • If surface rust appears, you can gently remove it with polishing wadding or a very fine abrasive pad.

For safe transport and stylish wear, we recommend purchasing a suitable leather frog or a custom-made scabbard to go with this sword.
