US Cavalry Saber Model 1860

Introduced to the American cavalry in 1860 as a successor to the somewhat heavier Model 1840 (often called the "Old Wristbreaker"), this saber quickly saw heavy action. It was used extensively in the Civil War, which broke out in 1861, as well as in the Indian Wars on the prairies during the 1870s and 1880s. This replica captures the spirit of the era and is suitable for collectors and re-enactors. Further product information ...

US Cavalry Saber Model 1860

Features and Construction

Along with the saber, you will receive a metal scabbard corresponding to the original design. The scabbard is polished and features two suspension rings for hanging on a belt or displaying on a wall. The hilt components and pommel are made of polished brass. The ergonomically shaped grip, wrapped in imitation leather and twisted brass wire, fits perfectly in the hand.

The blade is made of hardened carbon steel and features a fuller (groove) to reduce weight and improve the overall balance of the saber. The surface is polished to a satin finish.

Maintenance and Edge Note

The blade is made of carbon steel and is therefore not corrosion-resistant; regular oiling is required. The blade is ground to shape and polished to a "satin sheen" with an edge thickness of approximately 1mm. If you wish to sharpen the edge further, be aware that this will disrupt the polished finish, and you will need to re-polish the area (e.g., using polishing paste and a felt wheel).
