History and Elegance of the American Civil War

The original pattern of this sword dates back to 1850, when it was formally adopted by the US War Department as the regulation sidearm for Field and Staff Officers (majors, lieutenant colonels, colonels, and staff command). It saw widespread service throughout the 1850s and 1860s, most notably during the American Civil War (1861–1865). Interestingly, during the pre-war years, notable commanders such as General Robert E. Lee carried this exact model while serving in the US Army during the Indian campaigns.

The high-carbon steel blade features a double fuller and is beautifully etched with military trophies, floral scrollwork, and patriotic inscriptions including "U.S.", "E Pluribus Unum", and the traditional "Iron Proof" stamp. The leather-wrapped wooden grip is bound with brass wire for a firm, comfortable hold. The prominent half-basket guard made of cast brass features intricate openwork filigree with the letters "US" set between the branches. The sword comes complete with a blued steel scabbard with brass mounts and dual suspension rings.
