History and Origin of the Model 1840 Cavalry Saber
The original pattern of this famous saber dates back to the 1840s in the 19th century, when it was officially adopted by the United States Army Cavalry in 1840. Its design was heavily inspired by the successful French Model 1822 Heavy Cavalry Saber. Throughout the 19th century, it served as a primary edged weapon for US troopers during the Mexican-American War and extensively throughout the American Civil War (1861–1865).
Designed as a heavy cavalry sword, it was built for powerful slashes and thrusts from horseback. The 1065 high carbon steel blade features a full tang that extends through the entire hilt and is peened at the pommel. The blade is engineered with twin fullers: a wide main fuller (approx. 61 cm / 24.0 in) to reduce weight while maintaining rigidity, and a narrow fuller (approx. 39 cm / 15.4 in) along the spine. The hand is protected by a solid three-branch brass guard, while the wooden grip is wrapped in black leather and bound with twisted brass wire.
Origin of the Name Wrist Breaker
The legendary nickname Wrist Breaker was coined directly by 19th-century cavalry troopers. The saber earned this reputation due to its heavy weight, substantial blade thickness, and forward-weighted balance point. Extended drill sessions or swinging the sword mounted on horseback required immense forearm strength, which often caused severe wrist strain and fatigue for new recruits.
