Ankle-High Leather Viking Boots Trondheim with Side Lacing
Historical Context and Practical Use
Footwear reaching slightly above the ankles was an absolute standard in the Scandinavian and Germanic spheres. The asymmetrical side fastening, achieved in this case by threading leather cords through precisely stitched holes, helped to secure the foot better inside the shoe without creating uncomfortable pressure on the instep arch. Due to its parameters and appearance, the footwear is particularly suitable for portraying the Early Middle Ages, namely Vikings, Normans, or Slavs. Today, owing to its sturdiness, you will use it primarily for reenactment, stage combat, and LARP battles.
Material, Colour Variants, and Leather Care
The upper of the boots is carefully sewn from high-quality cowhide and is factory-treated with a beeswax balm. This balm not only softens and impregnates the leather but also gives it a characteristic, slightly darkened patina. To maintain a long lifespan, flexibility, and water resistance, it is imperative to regularly treat the boots with available leather care products. Waxes, leather oils, or standard shoe polish will serve you excellently, additionally allowing you to easily cover any scuffs acquired during a march through the forest. Under no circumstances should you dry the footwear near a direct heat source, such as an open fire or a hot radiator, as the leather would irreversibly harden and crack.
By default, we supply this footwear in black, dark brown, and light brown (natural) colours. If you desire other colour shades, we achieve them by applying a special topcoat dye. Please remember, however, that this topcoat shares the properties of patent leathers. Over time and due to stress, small cracks may appear, or the coating may crumble locally (especially in the flex zones of the foot). This is a natural phenomenon, not a defect. Nonetheless, for occasional historical celebrations, even footwear treated in this manner will serve you exceptionally well.
Movement Safety and Custom Fit
Period footwear with a leather sole requires a different walking style from its wearer. Please exercise extra caution on wet grass, in the mud, and especially on smooth modern surfaces (tarmac, cobblestones), where there is a real risk of slipping. Always keep this fact in mind during combat or running.
If you choose the custom-made variant and wear orthotic insoles, it is absolutely necessary to send these insoles to us in advance. They will be precisely integrated directly into the shoe, ensuring the footwear fits you absolutely perfectly in the end and provides your feet with the proper support.
