While in the Middle Ages a full scabbard predominantly protected the weapon, a half-scabbard offers an excellent compromise between blade protection and absolute drawing speed. Especially with longer and heavier swords, carrying them on a baldric (diagonally across the shoulder) allows for much better weight distribution than a classic waist belt and does not restrict the warrior's rapid footwork in any way.

Usage Instructions and Proper Care

Sling the baldric diagonally across your shoulder so that the half-scabbard rests on your hip or back, depending on your preference. The massive metal buckle allows for smooth length adjustment of the carrying strap, which has a generous standard length of 160 cm (63 inches). The construction is standardly sized for swords with a blade width at the crossguard of up to 50 mm (1.97 in) and a thickness of up to 5 mm (0.2 in). To ensure the thick cowhide serves you reliably for a long time and maintains its look, regularly treat it with a beeswax-based leather balm. This will help the leather retain its suppleness and gain resistance against sweat and moisture.

Safety and Warnings

If you are placing a weapon with a sharp blade into the hanger, exercise extreme caution. The half-scabbard does not protect the tip and lower part of the sword. Carrying sharp weapons in this type of open frog poses a massive risk of injury to yourself and those around you and is done entirely at your own risk. Never dry the leather near an open fire or on a hot radiator, as it could irreversibly crack, harden, and lose its shape.
