Antique Brass Hook and Eye Clasp for Rapier Baldrics
The Clever Mechanism of Renaissance Fencers
During the Renaissance period, when rapiers and swords became an integral part of the civilian attire of the nobility and wealthy burghers, the need arose to wear the weapon in a way that did not interfere with daily life. A long blade could be very cumbersome when sitting down at a table or riding a horse. This is precisely why leather hangers were often equipped with such metal hooks. The swordsman could easily and gracefully detach his weapon without having to remove his often beautifully decorated main belt.
How to Assemble the Clasp Correctly
Mounting this hardware onto your leatherworking project is straightforward. Thread the round eye piece with the crossbar directly onto your main carrying belt (which should not exceed 26 mm / 1.02 inches in width). Conversely, attach the hook to the narrower carrying strap of the scabbard hanger itself. To secure the leather in the rectangular loop of the hook, we highly recommend you use classic saddler's rivets or stitch it firmly with waxed linen thread. The strap should ideally be up to 13 mm (0.5 inches) wide so that it sits well without deforming.

Safety Warnings for Use
The zinc alloy used for this casting is excellent for achieving beautiful details, but it can be brittle under impact loading or leverage. This set primarily fulfills a decorative function suitable for LARP, costume wear, or theatrical performances. Absolutely avoid jerky movements, snagging, and the use of excessive brute force when drawing your rapier in a flash! Under such extreme tension, the cast metal could break, causing your weapon to fall and potentially sustain damage. This component is not intended for heavy full-contact fencing (HEMA) or rough handling.
