Viking Sword Harald Hardrada of Pattern-Welded Steel

Historical Roots and Norse Typology

This sword is inspired by bladed weapons from the late Viking Age, approximately the 10th century. A typical feature is the multi-lobed pommel and short, robust crossguard, decorated with geometric engravings. According to the famous Petersen typology of Viking swords, this piece could be categorised among types showing strong Carolingian influence with a richly decorated hilt. The historical purpose of these swords was to deliver devastating cutting blows over shield walls. The patterned blade (pattern-welded steel) historically indicated the warrior's high status, as the manufacturing process was extremely costly and tedious. The sword is named after the famous Norwegian king Harald Hardrada, who is often referred to as the last great Viking leader.

Materials and Craftsmanship of the SWM Series

The weapon belongs to our upgraded SWM series. The blade is forged in our in-house forge from pattern-welded steel and is hardened to approximately 50-55 HRC, giving it excellent cutting properties and toughness. Due to capacity and quality control, the heat treatment process for this series is outsourced to trusted local workshops, but the quality of the steel itself remains uncompromising. The handle and scabbard are covered with high-quality PU leather, which resists moisture well. The metal elements of the hilt (guard and pommel) are cast from white copper (cupronickel/paktong), giving the weapon a beautiful silvery shine resistant to rapid oxidation.

Safety Warnings and Practical Use

This sword is supplied with a sharp blade. It is designed as a fully functional replica suitable for cutting practice (tameshigiri) on soft targets, or as a premium collectible piece. We strongly advise that the sword is by no means intended for contact historical fencing, HEMA duels, LARP, or stage combat against another person or steel weapons. Using a sharp weapon carries the risk of serious or fatal injury. Using the weapon for cutting drills is entirely at your own risk, and neither the manufacturer nor the seller holds any liability for any damage to health or property.

How to Properly Care for Your Sword

To ensure the sword serves you for many years and the steel pattern remains beautifully visible, regular maintenance is required. The blade is made of high carbon steel and is prone to rust. After every touch with a bare hand or after cutting drills, it is essential to wipe the blade dry and treat it with a suitable gun oil (e.g., Ballistol). Avoid storing the sword in its scabbard in a humid environment for prolonged periods; the PU leather on the scabbard is impermeable to moisture, but condensation can form inside. Never use the sword to strike hard materials such as trees, metals, or stones, as this would cause irreversible damage to the edge.
