Chieftain's Sword from Langeid – Decorated Viking Weapon with Christian Mystique

Unique Find and Historical Context

This sword is based on the find at Langeid (grave no. 8), dated to approximately 1030 AD. This is the late Viking Age, a period heavily influenced by Anglo-Saxon art and Christianity. Typologically, the weapon corresponds to transitional forms of Petersen types, featuring a distinctly down-sloping crossguard and a lobed pommel typical of late Viking swords. What makes this piece exceptional is its hilt. It is richly decorated with silver, copper, and gold, bearing Latin characters and Christian symbols (crosses, stylized "S" and "R"), the exact meaning of which is still debated by historians today. It is assumed these are abbreviations for prayers or invocations of Christ (Xristos Salvator, Rex), intended to protect the bearer in battle.

Construction and Practical Use

Although this sword is beautifully decorated, it is not simply a wall decoration. It is a fully functional weapon made from 1080 high carbon steel. The blade is heat-treated and tempered to withstand real use. Unlike the original, which had a very short grip (approx. 3.5 inches), the grip of this replica has been slightly lengthened to provide a more comfortable hold for the modern swordsman, without compromising the aesthetic of the wire wrapping.

Given that the blade is supplied extremely sharp, strict safety precautions must be observed:

  • Cutting Tests (Tameshigiri): The sword is suitable for cutting practice on soft targets (tatami mats, plastic bottles), provided you have the appropriate experience.
  • Contact Fencing: Due to the sharp blade, this sword is completely unsuitable for contact fencing (HEMA, reenactment, stage combat) against another person. There is a risk of fatal injury.
  • Solo Drill: Ideal for practicing forms, drawing techniques, and weapon handling.

Care Instructions

To ensure this masterpiece serves you for as long as possible, treat it with proper care. The carbon steel blade is prone to corrosion. Wipe it dry after every touch with bare hands or use and preserve it with suitable oil (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol, or gun oil). Clean the decorated hilt only with a soft cloth; avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the gold and silver plating. Do not store the sword in the leather scabbard for long periods, as leather can trap moisture and cause the blade to rust.

We recommend pairing this sword with a high-quality belt frog or a period-appropriate pouch to complete your chieftain costume.
