Decorative Royal Viking Sword with Runes and Wooden Plaque

Historical Context and Typology of Viking Swords

In Viking society, swords were a symbol of high status, wealth, and power. A common warrior had to make do with an axe or a spear, while only experienced chieftains (jarls) or kings themselves could afford a sword. From the perspective of historical weapon typology (the so-called Petersen typology), this sword is inspired by richly decorated originals featuring a five-lobed pommel and a short, straight crossguard. The short crossguard had a purely practical reason – it did not restrict the warrior's wrist when manoeuvring in a tight shield wall. The engraved runic characters in the blade's fuller refer to the old Norse belief that runes grant the weapon magical and protective properties, or mark the name of a famous blacksmith.

Materials and Detailed Craftsmanship of the Replica

The double-edged blade of the sword is crafted from high-quality 420 stainless steel and features a wide central fuller, in which the aforementioned runic inscription is located. The hilt of the weapon is made of a massive light metal alloy casting, which is surface-treated with an attractive antique patina. The grip, crossguard, and pommel are exceptionally richly decorated with raised Celtic and Norse ornaments and studded with red and yellow cabochons that faithfully imitate precious stones and amber. Included in the package is a dark wooden wall plaque in the shape of a shield with mounting pegs, which underlines the luxurious character of this weapon.

Principles of Safe Use and Warnings

Strong Warning: This royal Viking sword is primarily designed and constructed exclusively as a decorative collector's item and an interior prop. Due to the use of stainless steel and a die-cast hilt, the weapon is under no circumstances intended for contact historical fencing, martial arts training (HEMA), battles, or cutting tests. Stainless steel is brittle, and the cast hilt is not designed to absorb heavy impacts. Any hard strike poses an acute risk of fatal failure and blade breakage, which presents a serious risk of injury to yourself and those around you. Always keep the weapon safely out of the reach of small children.

Sword Maintenance and Recommended Accessories

Thanks to the application of high-quality stainless steel, this sword is practically maintenance-free and easily resists airborne corrosion. To maintain its perfect cleanliness and shine, simply polish the blade and the intricate metal hilt occasionally and carefully with a dry, fine duster or a microfibre cloth. You can lightly treat the wooden plaque with a wood furniture polish. To create a complete and stylish Viking corner, we recommend purchasing a traditional linen Viking tunic or a decorated leather belt to go with this sword, which will perfectly complement your historical display.
