Roman Spear Butt Spike - Solid Brass Spiculum - Pilum, Hasta & Sponthon
Product Description and Features
This replica of a Roman butt spike is made from solid brass, giving it a golden sheen as well as a substantial weight and robust construction. Its design consists of two main parts: a hollow socket and a sharp, tapering point. The socket is shaped like a slightly conical tube that transitions into a flared, decorative ring at its end. At the opposite end, there is an elegant transition ring that connects the socket to the body of the spike. The spike itself, which emerges from the ring, has a quadrangular cross-section and is precisely shaped to a point. The overall length of 33 cm and a weight of 692 g ensure that the butt spike functions as a perfect counterweight to the heavy spearhead on the opposite end of the shaft, making the weapon easier to handle.
Historical Use and Context
Spear butt spikes, also known as "rear points" or "spiculum," were an integral part of Roman spears, such as the famous pilum, as well as the hasta and the cavalry sponthon. Their main function was not to stab enemies. They served primarily as a counterweight that balanced the heavy metal head on the other end of the shaft. This made the spear easier to handle and gave it better flight stability and accuracy when thrown. Additionally, if the head broke or the spear was thrown and could not be used, this butt spike could serve as an emergency stabbing weapon. Soldiers also used it to stick the spear into the ground, which made handling easier in battle and on the march.
One fascinating fact is that the Romans relied on their spears when building their fortifications, such as marching camps. The butt spikes were used for the quick and effective erection of temporary barricades, with soldiers sticking the spears into the ground to slow the enemy's advance. The multi-purpose use of weapons was typical for the Romans and demonstrates their practicality and ingenuity.
Care and Safety
This butt spike is made of brass, which maintains its lustre for a long time but can oxidise over time. To preserve the original appearance of the product, we recommend polishing it regularly. You can use a soft cloth and a special metal polishing paste for this, which is available in any hardware store. Do not use aggressive chemicals or abrasive cleaners that could scratch the surface.
Although the construction and quality of this replica would allow for practical use, it is primarily a decorative item and prop. The manufacturer does not provide any warranty for practical use (e.g., for stage fighting or reenactment). Therefore, it is important to handle the product with care.
