The helmet is crafted from 1.6mm (16 gauge) thick steel with a polished finish, giving it an authentic look. Its greatest advantage is its clever visor mechanism: you can classically flip it up, or you can completely remove it using the two side pins. Visored Bascinet with Removable Visor, 1.6mm Steel

Sophisticated Design and Functionality

This replica of a late medieval bascinet faithfully captures the design of its historical original. The helmet's skull (bowl) provides ample space and protection for the top of the head. The visor itself is designed for combat: a narrow rectangular eye-slit (approx. 2 to 2.5 cm wide) offers eye protection, while numerous ventilation holes on the lower half ensure a sufficient supply of air for breathing.

The key feature is the dual function of the visor. It is attached to side pivots, allowing it to be easily flipped up. Furthermore, these pivots are themselves locking pins. After pulling them out (and securing them with chains to prevent loss), you can detach the entire visor and wear the helmet as an open-faced bascinet, which is ideal for better ventilation and communication off the battlefield.

Comfort and Interior Fittings

Inside the helmet, a comfortable leather inlay is firmly riveted to the bowl, helping to absorb shock and ensure a stable fit on the head. A sturdy chin strap made from 2mm thick black leather, equipped with a steel buckle for easy adjustment, ensures a secure fit.

A Piece of History on Your Head

The Bascinet evolved in the early 14th century from the simpler cervelliere (or secret helmet) and quickly became one of the most widespread helmets throughout Central Europe. Its popularity lasted well into the 15th century thanks to its excellent compromise between protection, visibility, and mobility. The ability to remove the visor was a prized feature, allowing a knight to quickly adapt from the full heat of battle to the relative safety of marching troops or camp life.

How to Care for Your Helmet

To ensure your steel helmet lasts a long time and remains pristine, it needs proper care. After each use, especially in damp conditions, dry the helmet thoroughly. We recommend regularly treating it with a thin layer of conservation oil (e.g., WD-40 or mineral oil) to prevent rust. Keep the leather parts dry and treat them with a leather care product from time to time. Store the helmet in a dry, ventilated place.

Important Notice

This helmet (bascinet) is primarily designed as a costume accessory for re-enactment, LARP, cosplay, or as a decoration. It is made from 1.6mm mild steel and is not certified or tested for full-contact combat, such as buhurt (e.g., Battle of the Nations). Although it provides a degree of protection, its use in any form of combat is entirely at your own risk.
