Viking Sword of the Isle of Eigg, Type D, with Leather Scabbard
A Faithful Replica from the Isle of Eigg
This Viking sword is inspired by a unique artifact unearthed in 1830 on the Isle of Eigg in the Inner Hebrides. The original hilt, inlaid with silver and adorned with intricate engravings, is now housed in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. Our sword, classified as a Petersen Type D, reproduces these magnificent patterns with the utmost fidelity. Although the original blade did not survive, a classic Norse sword shape from the Early Middle Ages was chosen for this reconstruction.
Detailed Craftsmanship of Sword and Scabbard
The double-edged blade is forged from hardened EN45 spring steel and features the characteristic broad fuller, which reduced the weapon's weight without sacrificing its strength. The hilt is cast from bronze and consists of an oval guard and an elaborate pommel, which, like many historical originals, has a two-part construction. The ornamentation is enhanced by elegant inlays of twisted copper wire. The grip is wrapped in brown leather for a firm, comfortable hold. The sword is complete with a sturdy wood-core scabbard, covered in brown leather and fitted with a decorative bronze chape, locket, and a belt loop suitable for belts up to 6 cm wide.
How You Can Use This Sword
This replica is primarily designed as a collector's item and a decorative piece. Thanks to its authentic appearance, it is perfectly suited as:
- A Striking Decorative Piece: Display it on the wall of your home or office to add a touch of the Viking era.
- A Costume Accessory: Whether you are heading to a historical fair, a LARP event, or a photoshoot, this sword will perfectly complete your Viking attire.
- A Prop: It is ideal for theatre productions, film shoots, or as an educational tool.
Important Notice: This sword has unsharpened edges and is not a battle-ready weapon. It is not designed for combat, sparring, or stage fighting.
The Sword as a Viking Status Symbol
In the Viking Age, a sword was not a common weapon for every warrior. Its production was expensive and complex, making it a possession of chieftains, jarls, and wealthy warriors. A sword was not just a deadly weapon but, above all, a symbol of power, wealth, and high social standing. The find from the Isle of Eigg, with its precious metals and intricate decoration, is clear proof of this. Owning such a weapon symbolically places you among the elite of Norse society.

Care and Safety Instructions
How to Care for Your Sword
The EN45 steel used is not stainless and is therefore prone to rust. To maintain the sword's beauty, it requires regular care. Wipe the blade dry after each handling and regularly apply a thin coat of oil, such as Ballistol or WD-40, to prevent corrosion. The leather scabbard and its metal fittings should also be kept clean and dry.
Safety First
Although this sword is not sharpened, it is still a heavy, pointed metal object. Always handle it with respect and caution. Never point it at people or animals. Ensure you have ample space when handling it, and always keep it out of the reach of children.
