Viking Bearded Practice Axe with Norse Knotwork Engraving

Historical Context and the Advantages of the Bearded Axe

This axe represents a typical Norse bearded axe (Old Norse skeggöx), where the lower portion of the cutting edge is extended downwards parallel to the haft. This iconic "beard" was not merely a decorative design element. It provided the warrior with a significantly longer cutting surface without making the axe head unnecessarily heavy and unwieldy. Furthermore, it served as an excellent tactical tool in combat—experienced Viking warriors used the beard to hook the edges of enemy shields and pull them away, thereby opening a path to deliver a fatal strike, or used it to disarm an opponent.

Safe Usage and Important Warnings

Even though the blade is intentionally given a blunt edge, it is still a weapon weighing over a kilogram / 2.2 pounds that must be handled with the utmost caution. The axe is designed for light stage combat (HEMA drills, LARP) and as a decorative display or costume piece. It is absolutely not suitable for full-contact heavy combat (buhurt) or for throwing. Likewise, this is not a chore tool—do not use it for chopping wood, as this could irreversibly damage the seating of the head on the haft. Before every use, always carefully check that the axe head sits firmly on the wooden shaft.

Care for Carbon Steel and Wood

The metal parts are made of carbon steel, which requires regular maintenance to preserve its structural integrity and appearance. After every training session, or even just after handling it with bare hands (aggressive sweat promotes corrosion), it is absolutely essential to thoroughly wipe down the steel head and protect it with a thin layer of high-quality gun oil. We recommend occasionally treating the wooden haft with linseed oil or natural beeswax so the wood does not dry out and begin to crack.
