Leather Belt Frog for Axe or Mace with Metal Ring
This functional holder is crafted from high-quality, strong genuine buffalo leather. The main load-bearing parts have a thickness of approximately 3.0 to 3.4 mm, while the trapezoidal base features leather around 2.5 mm thick. This combination guarantees both resilience and sufficient flexibility. The overall external dimensions of the frog are approximately 19.5×12 cm, with the trapezoidal base itself measuring about 11.5×12 cm.
At the heart of the holder is a robust metal ring with an internal diameter of approximately 51 mm (outer diameter approx. 61.5 mm), which is roughly 2 inches inside. The smooth surface of the ring allows for easy insertion of the axe or mace handle, or another tool, while also enabling a quick draw when needed. Two sturdy leather loops, each about 16.5 mm wide, are designed to fit belts up to a maximum width of 80 mm (approx. 3.15 inches). The individual leather parts are firmly joined by durable metal rivets, which not only ensure the strength of the connection but also aesthetically match the metal ring, lending the frog an authentic look. The total weight of the frog is only about 80 g, making it barely noticeable on the belt. The product is available in classic brown and black leather colours.
Historical use
Belt hangers for tools and weapons were an essential part of equipment for centuries. They were used by warriors (e.g., Vikings, medieval foot soldiers), craftsmen, and travellers alike. They allowed an axe, hammer, mace, or other necessary item to be kept constantly at hand – whether for defence, work, or setting up camp – without hindering the wearer's movement. They were a practical solution for anyone who needed free hands while maintaining quick access to their gear.
Modern use
Even today, this type of holder finds its applications:
- Historical Fencing and Reenactment: Perfectly complements your attire for authentically and safely carrying replica axes, maces, or other hafted weapons.
- LARP (Live Action Role Play): A must-have for characters such as warriors, barbarians, dwarves, rangers, or craftsmen.
- Cosplay and Theatre: Enhances the authenticity of your costume and character.
- Collectors: A stylish and practical way to display or carry your historical replica.
- Outdoor, Bushcraft, and Work: Allows for the convenient carrying of a smaller axe or hatchet during outdoor activities, camping, or work in the garden or woods.
A note from history
The use of simple ring hangers on belts for carrying tools and weapons dates back to the Iron Age. They were particularly popular among groups like the Vikings, who often carried their characteristic battle and work axes this way. The simplicity, light weight, and effectiveness of this design ensured its survival over many centuries.
Care and storage
To ensure your leather frog lasts as long as possible, follow a few simple principles:
- Protect from moisture: Genuine leather does not tolerate prolonged exposure to wet conditions. Avoid rain and excessive moisture. If the frog gets wet, allow it to air dry naturally at room temperature (never near a radiator or in direct sunlight).
- Cleaning: Wipe away dust and everyday dirt with a dry or very lightly dampened soft cloth (linen is ideal). For more stubborn marks, use a cloth lightly dampened with a weak solution of neutral soap, but wipe the area dry immediately afterwards.
- Conditioning: From time to time, you can treat the leather with a suitable leather care product (conditioner, balm, or wax based on natural oils and waxes) to keep it supple and help protect it.
- Storage: When not in use, store the frog in a dry, ventilated place. Ideally, hang it up or lay it flat to prevent it from becoming misshapen by pressure from other items.
