Viking Scale Armour for LARP | Steel & Leather Cuirass

Construction and Premium Materials

The foundation of this armour is honest craftsmanship. It consists of dozens of steel scales that overlap to effectively distribute the force of any impact. Let's look at the details:

  • Steel Scales: Each 6 x 4 cm scale is crafted from tough yet flexible mild steel with a thickness of approx. 1 mm (20 gauge). Please note this is not stainless steel and requires maintenance.
  • Leather Foundation: The scales are riveted to a robust backing of genuine black leather, approx. 1.5 mm thick.
  • Reliable Fastenings: You can easily adjust the armour to your body thanks to six adjustable straps (three on each side) made from thick 4 mm leather and fitted with sturdy iron buckles.

How to Choose the Right Size

To ensure a perfect fit, it is crucial to measure your chest circumference while wearing your gambeson or any other padded garment you plan to wear underneath. The cuirass is put on over the head and tightened using the side straps.

Size Chest Circumference (over gambeson) Overall Length (approx.) Weight (approx.)
M 94 - 104 cm (37" - 41") 66 cm (26") 8.8 kg (19.4 lbs)
L 105 - 115 cm (41.5" - 45.5") 69 cm (27.2") 9.0 kg (19.8 lbs)
XL 116 - 126 cm (45.5" - 49.5") 72 cm (28.3") 9.2 kg (20.3 lbs)

Use in Battle and Beyond

This versatile armour is the perfect choice for any warrior, wherever you are headed:

  • LARP: Become an invincible Viking jarl, a Roman legionary, or a fantasy hero. The flexibility of the armour allows you complete freedom of movement in combat.
  • Historical Reenactment: It will provide you with reliable protection during training and historical battle reconstructions.
  • Cosplay & Festivals: Complement your costume with a breathtaking element that will guarantee admiration at any event.
  • Theatre & Film: It's an ideal prop for historical and fantasy characters, adding a layer of authenticity.

A Look into History

Armour Proven by Millennia

Scale armour (in Latin, lorica squamata) is one of the oldest and most successful types of body protection in history. Its roots trace back to antiquity, where it was popularly used by the Scythians, Persians, and later the famous Roman legions. Its popularity endured into the Middle Ages, with various forms appearing all over the world, from Europe to Asia. The reason was its effectiveness and its relatively easy manufacture and repair.

Ingenious and Inspired by Nature

The design of overlapping scales is no accident—it is inspired by nature, such as the skin of fish or reptiles. This principle allows the force of a sword or axe blow to be distributed over a larger area and absorbed by the individual scales. Furthermore, the point of an arrow or sword would tend to glance off the rounded scales without penetrating, making it a brilliantly simple yet highly functional concept.

Caring for Your New Armour

Because this cuirass is made from non-stainless steel, it requires regular care to ensure it serves you for as long as possible and loses none of its beauty.

  1. Keep it Dry: After each use, especially in a humid environment, wipe the armour down thoroughly with a dry cloth.
  2. Oil Conservation: Regularly treat the steel scales with a thin layer of maintenance oil (like Ballistol or WD-40) to prevent rust from forming.
  3. Leather Care: Occasionally treat the leather parts with a leather conditioner to prevent them from hardening and cracking.
  4. Storage: Store the armour in a dry, well-ventilated place.
