Historical Origin and Construction

This arming sword draws its inspiration from European knightly weapons of the late Middle Ages, specifically the 14th to 15th century. According to the recognized Oakeshott typology, the blade with its straight fuller corresponds to Type Xa or XI. The visually distinct pommel represents the rare but historically documented Type N (crescent/crescent-moon pommel), which appeared on swords across Southern and Central Europe. The wide, down-slanted guard protects the hand and aids in binding opponent blades. The hilt features a full tang enclosed in wood, wrapped in durable leather, and reinforced with steel wire.

In medieval warfare, the single-handed sword served as the primary sidearm for knights and heavy infantrymen. Paired with a buckler or heater shield, it allowed swift cuts, agile parries, and tight footwork in close engagements. The crescent pommel provided not only striking aesthetics but also served as a counterweight to shift the balance point closer to the hilt.

Maintenance and Safety Guidelines

Inspect the sword thoroughly before every training session. The blade is forged from high-carbon spring steel, which is not stainless. We recommend cleaning off sweat and moisture after every use and applying a protective gun oil (such as Ballistol). If burrs or notches develop along the striking edge during contact, file them smooth immediately using a diamond file or fine sandpaper. If the hilt loosens over extended use, the pommel peen should be retightened.

Safety Notice: The stage combat version features thick blunt edges (2–3 mm) and a rounded safety tip.
