Single-Handed Sagot Sword with Brass Pommel and Cross-Guard
Appearance and design: The sword has a straight, double-edged blade that tapers evenly towards the point. The blade has a central fuller to save weight. The most distinctive feature is the brass cross guard, which is quite wide (about 22.5 cm). Its arms are elegantly curved towards the blade and widen slightly at the ends. This shape is reminiscent of the cross guards of the Oakeshott type 6, which were common in the High Middle Ages. The grip of the sword is designed for a one-handed grip. It consists of a wooden core that is tightly wrapped in cowhide and twisted wire to ensure a secure grip. The sword is topped by a solid brass pommel in the characteristic ‘mushroom’ or ‘teapot’ shape, which corresponds to Oakeshott's type H. The combination of these elements (cross guard type 6, pommel type H and the general blade shape) is reminiscent of the knights' swords of the High Middle Ages, roughly from the 11th to the 13th century. The proportions of the blade could be reminiscent of Oakeshotts Type XII.
Materials and specifications: The blade is made of high-quality spring steel ČSN 14260, hardened in an oil bath to an approximate hardness of 47 HRC. It is important to know that this steel is not corrosion resistant and requires regular care (cleaning and oil preservation) to prevent corrosion. The pommel and cross guard are made of cast brass. This is a Czech product.
Possible uses: This Sagot sword is an excellent display piece for collectors of historical weapons, as an authentic costume accessory for historical events, LARP or reenactment. You can also order a variant suitable for historical fencing or stage fencing – in this case, the blade has a reinforced edge (2-3 mm) and a rounded tip so that it can be used for practising techniques and contact fencing within the safety rules of the respective activity.
Safety and Care: Remember that the sword is a weapon and must be handled responsibly and with the utmost care. All sword activities are done entirely at your own risk.
- Safety: Always keep the sword out of reach of children. Keep the sword out of reach of others and keep it away from others. When fencing, try to cover your blows with the flat of the blade, not the edge, to minimise damage. Deliver your blows in a technically correct manner and without unnecessary force.
- Maintenance: Inspect the sword before each use. Carefully file off any nicks or sharp spots on the blade that are caused by normal use and are not a material defect (e.g. with a diamond file or sandpaper). Clean the blade regularly and preserve it with anti-corrosion oil. It may happen that the cross guard loosens over time due to use – in this case, it is necessary to carry out repairs (e.g. rewinding, tightening the pommel).
The Sagot sword is a visually impressive and functionally designed weapon that, with proper handling and care, can serve you for a long time as a valuable collector's item or as a reliable partner in historical activities.
