Traditional Samurai Tanto Dagger with Dragon Motif and Sharp Blade
Design and Historical Symbolism
In the history of feudal Japan, the Tanto served as a samurai's backup weapon, ideal for close-quarters combat or for ritual purposes. This model is distinguished by the strong symbolism of the dragon, which in Japanese culture, unlike in the West, is seen as a mythical creature bringing good luck and wisdom. The form of the dragon is masterfully imprinted into the metal handguard (tsuba), where the mystical creature coils and surrounds the blade. The blade itself is forged from 1045 high carbon steel in the shinogi-zukuri geometry and is lightened by a longitudinal fuller (bo-hi). Its authentic appearance is enhanced by an artificial temper line (hamon), precisely created by a wavy cross-grind. The handle (tsuka) is traditionally underlaid with light, genuine ray skin and tightly wrapped with black cotton in the Hineri-Maki style. The assembly is completed by a brass collar (habaki) and washers (seppa). The dagger is housed in a glossy black lacquered wooden scabbard (saya) in the Kuroro style.
Important Safety Warning
This dagger has a sharp blade, and handling it requires the utmost caution! Although it is manufactured using traditional methods and is fully dismantlable, it is primarily a high-quality collectible and decorative item. It is not explicitly intended for hard practical use, such as contact fencing, man-to-man combat training, or cutting tests (tameshigiri). The 1045 steel is not designed to withstand extreme stress. Improper use carries not only the risk of damaging the weapon but, above all, the danger of serious or fatal injury. Any handling or use of the weapon is entirely at your own risk.
Carbon Steel Maintenance
To ensure your Tanto remains in perfect condition for a long time, regular maintenance of the blade is essential. Carbon steel is susceptible to rust, especially if it comes into contact with aggressive human sweat or atmospheric moisture. Do not touch the blade with bare hands. After every handling or drawing from the scabbard, gently wipe the blade with a dry, soft cloth and apply a thin layer of oil. Traditional Japanese clove oil (choji) or a high-quality modern gun oil is ideal for this purpose. Do not expose the weapon to extreme temperatures or a humid environment.
