How to Use and Wear the Frog

This leather frog is designed to be worn suspended from a belt. Simply thread your belt through the large leather loop at the top. The weapon itself (ideally housed in its scabbard) is then inserted into the front adjustable straps. To ensure the product performs flawlessly, it is made strictly to measure. Therefore, when placing your order, it is absolutely essential to provide us with the width of the blade (or scabbard) at its widest point, its thickness, and the exact dimensions of your belt (width x thickness). You can then use the two cast pronged buckles to fine-tune the grip, ensuring the weapon does not slip out but can still be drawn smoothly.

Historical Context and Celtic Style

Suspension frogs of this type were used in various forms throughout the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period to securely attach sidearms to the body. A distinctive feature of this particular model, however, is the cast buckles bearing a typical interlace ornament (often called a Celtic knot). This artistic style hearkens back to the Early Middle Ages, the culture of the insular Celts, and later the Norse Vikings. The frog is therefore perfectly suited for Early Medieval reenactment, but is also highly favoured among fantasy and LARP enthusiasts.

Caring for Genuine Leather

The frog is crafted from genuine cowhide, which requires basic maintenance to retain its strength and suppleness. We recommend treating the leather at least twice a year with a high-quality leather balsam containing beeswax. If the frog gets wet during an event, allow it to dry naturally at room temperature. Never place it on a radiator or near an open fire, as the leather could harden and crack.

Safety Instructions

For safety reasons, please remember that this type of frog is primarily intended for holding daggers and knives that are secured within their own rigid scabbards, or blunt HEMA and theatrical combat weapons with rounded tips. If you insert a sharply honed, bare blade into an open leather frog, you run a severe risk of the sharp edge slicing through the leather during movement or a fall, potentially causing serious injury.
