Women's Low Boots – Buffalo Leather – 12th–15th Century

Natural Material and Rustic Look

The foundation of these shoes is genuine buffalo leather. This material is prized for its strength and distinctive texture. Unlike fine calfskin, buffalo leather has a coarser grain, natural wrinkles, and small surface imperfections. These "flaws" are not defects but rather proof of natural origin, giving the shoes a patina that you would otherwise have to earn through years of wear. The leather is dyed using natural methods, so the shade may vary slightly from pair to pair.

Construction and Practical Details

The boots are based on the historical turnshoe construction. The cut is low, sitting below the ankle, with a characteristic "V" slit at the instep which makes them easy to slip on. The fit is secured by a simple leather thong that you can tie into a bow.

A major advantage of this model is the sole. As seen in the photos, the leather sole is reinforced with metal hobnails/tacks around the perimeter. This significantly increases the shoe's resistance to abrasion and improves traction on soft surfaces such as grass or soil. Inside the shoe, you will find comfort thanks to the flexibility of the material.

Historical Context

This type of simple low footwear was common across Europe for many centuries (approx. 12th to 15th century). They were worn by women of the burgher and rural classes as everyday work or indoor shoes. Thanks to their simplicity and lack of complex fastenings, they were affordable and practical. They were often worn in combination with woollen hose.

Care and Maintenance

To ensure your shoes stay soft and comfortable for as long as possible, give them a little care:

  • Cleaning: Remove dirt with a damp cloth or brush. Never wash shoes in a washing machine and do not dry them near direct heat sources (radiator, fire), as the leather would harden and crack.
  • Nourishment: Regularly apply leather grease or beeswax (we recommend product No. CP1). Buffalo leather is absorbent, and grease will restore its suppleness and water resistance.
  • Warning: The nailed sole can be slippery on smooth modern surfaces (tiles, concrete). Therefore, be careful when moving from outdoors to indoors.
