Medieval Cutlery Set – Knife and Pricker with Bone Handles
The Ancestor of the Fork
While the knife served to slice morsels from the roast, the pricker (often called a puncheon or eating pick) performed the function of today's fork. It was used to spear meat and transfer it to the mouth or onto a trencher (a slice of stale bread used as a plate). This kept the diner's fingers relatively clean. This set is crafted with an emphasis on a period-correct appearance. The knife blade and the pricker point are forged from carbon steel, which is easy to sharpen and acquires a beautiful grey patina over time.
The handles are made of genuine animal bone, polished to a smooth finish. Bone is a natural material, so every piece has its unique grain and shade (ranging from cream to yellow). The shape of the scales is ergonomic and flares slightly at the end, ensuring a secure grip. The entire set is housed in a period leather sheath with a long leather thong, allowing you to tie the cutlery to your belt or hang it from your purse.

History and Usage
The use of the knife and pricker pair is documented in iconography and finds from the High and Late Middle Ages. They were carried by both men and women. The knife was a personal item – hosts in the Middle Ages generally did not provide cutlery; everyone brought their own. This set is ideal for the period from the 13th to the 15th century. You can use it to cut meat, cheese, fruit, or bread.
Care for Historical Cutlery
Since the set is made from authentic materials, it requires a little love. Never put it in a dishwasher! Hot water and harsh chemicals would destroy the bone handle and cause the steel to rust. After the feast, wash the cutlery with lukewarm water, dry immediately, and coat the blade with cooking oil (e.g., olive or sunflower oil) or lard. If the steel develops surface rust, simply clean it with the rough side of a sponge. You can occasionally polish the bone handle with beeswax.
