Simple Padded Arming Cap – Cotton Coif
The Base Layer for Your Safety
Historically, caps like these were worn under mail coifs, kettle hats, and heavy helmets. Their purpose was to stabilize the helmet on the head so it wouldn't slide over the eyes during movement, and to protect the skull from abrasion by the metal. This model features a simple, anatomical cut made of stitched segments that follow the shape of the head. Without a neck drape (aventail), it is ideal for use under helmets that already have neck protection or for those who prefer a lighter option without extra fabric on the shoulders.
Material and Craftsmanship
The outer layer is made of 100% cotton in a natural color (cream/off-white), which feels comfortable against the skin and absorbs sweat effectively. Impact absorption is provided by an inner padding of 100% polyester. The overall material thickness is approximately 6 mm (approx. 0.25 inches), offering sufficient comfort without requiring you to buy a helmet two sizes larger.

Care Instructions
Since the cap absorbs a significant amount of sweat, regular maintenance is necessary to keep it hygienically clean:
- Washing: Hand wash only in cold water (max. 30°C / 85°F). Use a very small amount of mild detergent. Turn the cap inside out before washing.
- Drying: Do not tumble dry! Let it air dry naturally. It is advisable to gently squeeze the wet padding to remove excess water.
Recommendation
This cap is perfect under kettle hats, bascinets, or cervelliere helmets. If you plan to wear a mail coif, remember that this padded cap goes underneath the mail, not over it.
