History and Proper Use of the Gothic Coif

This type of fabric coif is based on historical originals commonly worn in Europe during the 14th and 15th centuries, the era of the High and Late Gothic. Historically, it was worn by both men and women across all social classes. For peasants and craftsmen, it provided basic head protection during work, while the nobility used it as a practical base layer beneath elaborate hats. Its main purpose was to protect the hair from dust, insulate against the cold, and fulfill a necessary hygienic function. Soldiers donned this coif under a heavy mail hood or a steel helmet to prevent abrasions and significantly increase the comfort of their armour.

Today, this product is excellent for historical reenactment, LARP, or theatrical performances. The coif is placed on the head to cover the ears and secured by tying the sturdy laces directly under the chin . Upon request, the product can be custom-made in other colours according to available fabric swatches (duvetine or linen). Care Instructions and Maintenance

Since the product is made of 100% cotton, it requires gentle care to serve you well for a long time. We strongly recommend washing it by hand or in a washing machine on a delicate cycle at up to 30 °C (86 °F). Do not use aggressive bleaches. Always dry the coif laid flat in the open air, and avoid using a tumble dryer to prevent shrinkage. It can be ironed on a medium setting. Recommended Accessories

To create an authentic 14th or 15th-century look, we highly recommend combining this coif with a period linen shirt, a warm woollen hood, or a classic gambeson. If you are portraying a soldier, this coif serves perfectly as a comfortable hygienic layer under a riveted mail coif or a kettle hat.
