Historical Background and Proper Use

This type of heavily padded fabric coif is based on historical originals commonly worn throughout Europe during the 14th and 15th centuries, the period of the High and Late Gothic. In history, it primarily served soldiers and knights as an essential shock-absorbing layer worn beneath heavy mail coifs and steel helmets. In addition to cushioning blows, it perfectly insulated against the cold and protected the head from chafing caused by bare metal. Today, it is ideal for historical reenactment, LARP battles, or fencing practice. The coif is simply placed on the head and firmly fastened by tying the laces directly under the chin.

The material made of 100% cotton effectively absorbs sweat. Upon request, we can custom-make the coif in other colours according to these fabric swatches. Care and Maintenance Instructions

Because the product is made of cotton and is heavily padded, we recommend maintaining it according to these cleaning instructions. Wash the coif exclusively by hand at a maximum temperature of 30 °C (86 °F) to prevent clumping of the inner padding. Avoid using bleaches and tumble dryers. We kindly remind you that display accessories shown in the photographs (such as the mannequin head) are not included in the delivery.

To create an authentic appearance of a heavy infantryman from the 14th or 15th century, we highly recommend combining this padded coif with a proper mail hood and a Gothic steel helmet. Do not forget to expand your armoury with a high-quality padded gambeson.
