Men's Gothic Cotton Fustian Arming Coif for Knightly Helmets
Historical Context and Usage in History
The fabric cap, commonly known as an arming coif, batvat, or simply a coif, is based on historical patterns frequently worn in Europe, particularly from the 13th to the 15th century. During the High and Late Gothic period, it was an absolutely common garment for men across all social classes. Commoners wore linen or cotton variations for protection against the sun and cold. Soldiers, mercenaries, and knights utilized these caps as an essential hygienic and cushioning base layer under heavy iron helmets and chainmail coifs. It prevented hair from being pulled out by rivets or mail rings and protected the skin from direct contact with cold metal.
How to Wear the Coif Correctly and Suitable Occasions
The coif is placed directly on the head, ensuring it reliably covers the ears and the nape of the neck. It is then securely fastened by tying two cotton cords under the chin. Today, you will use this product in a wide range of historical leisure activities. It is ideal as a base layer for safe HEMA fencing, theatrical combat, LARP events, or historical reenactment. However, please note that this is not protective armour suitable for full-contact combat such as buhurt (Battle of the Nations). It serves purely as a comfortable and hygienic layer.
Material and Proper Care of the Product
The primary material is fustian (dyftýn), a dense fabric napped on the face side, made of 100% cotton. This material faithfully imitates velvet, is highly durable, absorbent, and soft. To ensure the coif serves you for a long time, it must be cared for properly. Wash it gently in a washing machine using standard detergents at 30 °C (86 °F). It can be dried flat and ironed on a medium setting. Avoid the use of aggressive bleach. You can find more information here: Pokyny pro čištění a údržbu. From a safety perspective, remember that cotton is a flammable material. Never lean over an open campfire with the coif on your head to prevent ignition and burns.
