History and Use of the Arming Cap

This cap, historically known as an arming cap or batvat, is based on originals from the High and Late Middle Ages (12th to 15th centuries). It is properly worn as a base layer directly under a mail coif or a heavy steel helmet (such as a great helm or bascinet). The arming cap is sewn from cotton and linen and is quilted. The quilting creates the necessary padded protection. It ties under the chin with a ribbon, ensuring it stays securely in place even during rapid movements in combat. The natural fabrics guarantee excellent breathability. Soldiers commonly wore these caps on their own as regular headwear while working in the camp.

We recommend hand washing or using a gentle cycle for natural materials. Do not tumble dry, as the linen and cotton may shrink. For safety reasons, we warn that this cotton cap does not protect against sharp weapons; always use it exclusively in conjunction with a fully functional steel helmet.
