History and Use of the Padded Coif

This Gothic cap is faithfully based on historical patterns of padded coifs and arming caps that saw their greatest expansion in the 14th century. During the High and Late Middle Ages across Europe, these shock-absorbing layers were primarily worn as an absolutely essential foundation under mail coifs or massive steel helmets, such as period bascinets or heavy great helms. The cap is carefully sewn from a breathable blend of natural linen and cotton and features exceptionally thick padding (approx. 2 - 3 cm / 0.8 - 1.2 in). Its ingenious tailoring envelops not only the crown and back of the head but also protects the chin and neck, providing excellent support and preventing painful collarbone bruises from heavy armour. At the front of the neck, the cap is securely fastened using sturdy lacing. During everyday camp life, it can also be comfortably worn as a standalone and practical piece of headwear, just as medieval infantry often did. Interestingly, due to the heavy quilting, these caps often harboured fewer parasites than standard woollen hoods.

Fabric Care and Safety Guidelines

To ensure this piece of historical equipment serves you as long as possible, my friend, please follow the cleaning and maintenance instructions. We recommend washing the cap exclusively by hand in lukewarm water or in a washing machine using a very gentle cycle designed for linen and cotton. Never use harsh bleaches and do not tumble dry it, as this could lead to irreversible shrinkage of the natural fibres. Let it air dry flat in a well-ventilated area. Regarding safety, remember that the fabric cap alone does not provide full protection against cutting or impact weapons. During full-contact fencing, always use it strictly as a shock-absorbing base under a fully functional steel helmet; otherwise, you risk severe injury. Other clothing or armour parts shown in the photographs are not included.

Recommended Accessories

With this padded coif, we highly recommend acquiring a historically corresponding steel helmet, ideally a 14th-century bascinet with a visor, or a high-quality riveted mail coif. For perfect torso protection and a historically accurate look, a padded linen or cotton gambeson from the same historical era will also be an excellent addition.
