Are you looking for a reliable tool for your warrior's journey that forgives minor maintenance errors while looking great in the dojo? The "Red Wood" Iaito by John Lee is the ideal choice for beginners and advanced Iaido students who need a slightly shorter blade for better manoeuvrability. This sword is not intended for cutting, but for the safe practice of drawing (nuki-tsuke) and forms (kata). Its name stems from the unique appearance of the scabbard, which combines matte lacquer with the visible grain of the wood in a red-brown hue. Thanks to the blunt stainless steel blade, you need not worry about your fingers or rust if you forget to oil the sword immediately after training. Further product information ...

John Lee "Red Wood" Iaito – Short Version

Aesthetics and Functionality in Harmony

The most striking feature of this sword is its scabbard (saya). It is lacquered in the cha-ishime style, a matte, textured finish that does not show fingerprints and offers a non-slip grip when drawing. The handle (tsuka) is covered with genuine ray skin and tightly wrapped in black cotton in the classical style, ensuring a traditional look and sweat absorption. The metal guard (tsuba) features an elegant openwork design, visually lightening the sword.

Ideal for Training

The blade is hand-forged from 420 stainless steel. While this material is not used for sharp swords, it is excellent for a practice Iaito – it is low-maintenance and sturdy. The blade is blunt, so there is no risk of injury when practicing complex techniques. The distinct groove (bo-hi) on the spine of the blade not only reduces the weight of the sword but also provides important audible feedback – a correctly executed cut makes the sword "whistle" (the tachi-kaze sound). The sword can be fully disassembled; the blade is secured in the handle with two bamboo pegs (mekugi), a hallmark of quality construction.

Care and Maintenance

Although the blade is made of stainless steel, I recommend adopting proper sword care habits. Wipe the blade with a cloth after practice to remove dust and sweat. Protect the wooden scabbard and cotton wrapping from moisture. The sword comes in a cloth bag that protects it during transport to training.
