Tori Iaito Training Sword with Flying Crane Motif and Leather Wrap
Excellence in Detail: Fittings and Aesthetics
This Iaito stands out with its unique Koshirae, drawing from rich Japanese symbolism. Every element is designed to meet the demands of advanced practitioners:
- Tsuba (Guard): An iron guard featuring a finely pierced flying crane motif, representing grace and lightness of movement.
- Fuchi and Kashira: The handle fittings harmoniously complete the crane theme, giving the sword a unified artistic character.
- Menuki: Under the wrap are ornamental Kabuto (traditional samurai helmets), referencing warrior history and protection.
- Tsuka (Handle): The core is covered in genuine black rayskin (Same), with a tight wrap (Ito) made of high-quality brown leather. Leather offers superior durability and grip compared to cotton.
- Saya (Scabbard): The wooden scabbard in a brown semi-matte finish is reinforced at the mouth with lacquered black rattan, increasing durability for frequent drawing practice.

History and Context: The Way of the Crane
In Japanese culture, the crane (Tori/Tsuru) is revered as a sacred animal, symbolising longevity and loyalty. The Tori Iaito was created as a tribute to these values. While sharp katanas were tools of war, the Iaito became an essential tool during periods of peace for cultivating focus and movement perfection. The rattan wrap on the scabbard reflects historical reinforcements used to ensure the scabbard survived the rigours of daily training sessions.
Care and Safety Instructions
Although the stainless steel blade is rust-resistant, wipe it with a soft dry cloth after each session to remove oils. The leather handle wrap should occasionally be treated with a leather conditioner to keep it supple. Regularly check the mekugi pegs for tightness.
IMPORTANT WARNING:
- This sword is BLUNT and intended solely for Iaido practice.
- The blade is not intended for cutting (tameshigiri). Striking targets may cause the blade to snap.
- Never use for contact sparring, as it may cause fatal injuries.
We recommend a traditional sword maintenance kit and a padded sword bag for transport.
