Historical Context and the Symbolism of Bamboo

Traditional Japanese swords have been the ultimate symbol of the samurai class since the Muromachi and Edo periods (14th to 19th centuries). This model is named Zaza, which means bamboo in Japanese. In Japanese culture, bamboo is deeply revered for its straight growth, fresh green color, and incredible flexibility—representing purity, continuous growth, and acting as a powerful symbol of good fortune. The bamboo motif is elegantly integrated throughout the sword's decorations: from the finely detailed tsuba (guard), fuchi (collar), menuki (ornaments), and kashira (butt cap) to the small, golden bamboo leaves beautifully accenting the glossy lacquered saya (scabbard).

Design, Construction, and Training Vocation

This sword is ideal for practicing Iaido, Kendo kata, and correct drawing techniques (Nukitsuke). The blade is hand-forged in the Shinogi-Zukuri style from 420 stainless steel and features a longitudinal fuller (Bo-Hi). This groove lightens the blade and shifts the balance closer to the handle for optimal control, while also producing a distinct whistling sound (tachi-kaze) during a correctly executed swing. This provides you with immediate acoustic feedback on the correctness of your cutting angle.

The handle (tsuka) is made of hardwood, underlaid with genuine rayskin (samegawa), and wrapped in a black cotton cord in the classic Hineri-Maki style. Following strict traditions, the full-tang construction is fully dismountable, with the long tang (nakago) secured inside the handle by two bamboo pegs (mekugi). No plastic components are used. The scabbard fittings (kojiri, kurigata, koiguchi) are made of genuine buffalo horn, and a premium two-tone silk sageo completes this magnificent piece.

Important Warning

This sword is a blunt practice tool (Iaito). For safety and structural reasons, it is designed strictly for practicing forms (kata), drawing techniques, and movement exercises. It is completely unsuitable for contact combat (blade-on-blade striking) or any cutting tests (tameshigiri) on bamboo, straw mats, or other targets. 420 stainless steel is not rated for heavy structural impacts. Misuse can lead to material failure and serious injury!

Maintenance Guide

• Even though the blade is made of rust-resistant 420 stainless steel, you should wipe it with a dry cloth after every training session to remove sweat, and apply a thin layer of sword oil (such as camellia oil or Ballistol).
• Regularly inspect the condition and tightness of the bamboo pegs (mekugi) in the handle. If they show any signs of wear, do not use the sword until they are replaced.
• Protect the wooden scabbard (saya) from extreme humidity and abrupt temperature changes to prevent the wood from warping or cracking.

Recommended Accessories

To fully immerse yourself in your martial arts journey, we recommend purchasing traditional training attire, consisting of a training top (Keikogi) and wide pleated trousers (Hakama) in black or dark blue. For proper storage and presentation, a wooden horizontal sword stand (Katanakake) and a traditional Japanese sword cleaning kit with an uchiko powder ball are highly recommended additions.
