German Gothic Leg Armor, c. 1460–1500

History and Construction

Leg protection was absolutely crucial for cavalry in the 15th century. This model is based on an original armor from southern Germany, currently exhibited in a collection in Berlin. The piece reflects the Belgian and Austrian influences that shaped the German style of the age.

The entire surface features prominent fluting (ridges). This is not merely decorative—the ridges significantly strengthen the steel without adding excess weight and help deflect enemy weapon points away from the body. A notable feature is the lateral hinge system, similar to that found on the armor of Archduke Valdemar VI or Emperor Maximilian I.

The armor is modular—the cuisse (thigh plate) with the poleyn (knee) can be detached from the greave (shin guard). This makes transport and dressing much easier. Please note that the greaves are of the open-back style, secured with leather straps, allowing for a better fit on various calf sizes.

Important Usage Warning

Note: Although this armor is made of steel, it is not tempered sport armor suitable for full-contact heavy combat such as Buhurt, HMB, or Battle of the Nations. The construction and rivets are designed for historical reenactment, stage combat, and LARP. Extreme stress from full-force heavy weapons could deform the metal or damage the articulation. For comfortable wear and to prevent bruising, we strongly recommend wearing padded chausses (padded legs) underneath.

Maintenance

Since this product is made of mild steel (not stainless), it is susceptible to rust. To keep your armor looking its best:

  • Store it in a dry environment.
  • Wipe it dry immediately after every use to remove sweat.
  • Regularly protect the surface with mineral oil (e.g., WD-40) or synthetic armor oil.

Great item! I didn't expected it to be this good looking in natura! The thigh area is a bit tight, at the top of the upper thigh. But price and quality are hands down worth it all the way!

The price hands down is great. The leg harness was very stiff so I re-riveted the armor and slightly shortened the thigh so it fit better. Very tempted to change out the buckles. If you're around the measurements of this armor and love the design you'll enjoy this.
