Viking Belt Set Jellinge – Brass Buckle and Strap End

Historical Insight: The Jellinge Style

The design of this set is based on the Jellinge style (approx. 900–975 AD), named after the royal burial mounds in Jelling, Denmark. This style is characterized by its ribbon-like, S-shaped intertwined animal bodies. The beasts are often depicted in profile with open jaws and a prominent eye – exactly as seen on this replica. By wearing a belt adorned in this manner, you demonstrate that your character does not belong to the poorest class but has the means to display artistically valuable accessories.

Assembly Instructions for Your DIY Project

Attaching fittings to leather is a traditional craft skill that you can easily master with a little patience. The buckle features integrated posts (rivet pins) on the back, while the strap end has pre-made holes. For assembly, you will need a leather punch (e.g., SKU 9602), a hammer (ideally a ball-peen hammer), wire cutters, and suitable washers or rivets.

How to mount the buckle:

  1. Measure the centre of your strap and punch holes exactly where the buckle's pins are located using the leather punch.
  2. Push the pins through the leather. Place small brass washers over the protruding pins (washers are not included but can be easily made from scrap metal or purchased).
  3. If the pins are too long, trim them with wire cutters so that they protrude only about 2–3 mm (approx. 0.1") above the washer.
  4. Place the buckle face down on a soft surface (leather scrap, felt, soft wood) to avoid damaging the relief pattern.
  5. Gently hammer the ends of the pins to mushroom them out. This secures the washer in place, and the buckle will be firmly attached.

Note on the strap end: The strap tip does not have integrated pins. To attach it, you will need separate rivets of the appropriate diameter and washers, which are not part of this set.

Care and Maintenance

Brass is a beautiful but "living" material. Over time, it will naturally darken and develop a patina. For historical replicas, this is often a desirable effect that adds authenticity. However, if you prefer a high shine, you can polish the fittings using standard brass metal cleaners and a soft cloth. Avoid using wire wool or abrasive scouring agents, as these would scratch the fine details of the Jellinge ornaments.
