Medieval Brass Strap End with Scrollwork, 14th–15th Century

14th to 15th Century Gothic Fashion and Strap End Construction

Historical originals of two-part composite strap ends date back to the High and Late Middle Ages, specifically from 1300 to 1500. During the 14th and 15th centuries, European tailoring underwent a major revolution. Garments became closely fitted, and the long leather belt emerged as one of the most prominent indicators of social standing, wealth, and refined taste. Worn loosely tied at the waist, the belt's long tail was weighed down by a heavy metal strap end to ensure the leather draped elegantly downwards, resisted twisting, and threaded smoothly through the buckle. The sculptural scrollwork motif and teardrop silhouette capped with a terminal knob reflect High Gothic metalworking aesthetics.

This product is crafted as a solid hand-casting made of pure brass, featuring a darkened patina in the relief recesses. It utilizes a composite (sandwich) construction with an internal slot designed to receive the leather belt end. At its base, it features 2 rivet holes. Mounting onto a belt is straightforward: insert the end of a leather strap measuring approximately 18 to 20 mm (0.71 to 0.79 in) wide and up to 2.2 mm (0.09 in) thick into the open rear slot and securely rivet it using two brass rivets through the pre-drilled holes.

Brass Care and Safety Guidelines

My friend, to ensure this medieval fitting serves you for many years and retains its striking appearance, proper care is essential. Due to air moisture and sweat, the brass surface may naturally oxidise and darken over time, which is a normal characteristic that enhances its historic aesthetic. If you prefer a radiant golden shine, we recommend occasionally polishing the strap end gently with a soft cotton cloth and a specialized brass cleaner. Take care during riveting—strike only the rivets directly to avoid denting or scratching the raised relief of the casting.

Recommended Accessories

Along with this magnificent Gothic strap end, we strongly recommend purchasing a high-quality strip of cowhide leather 18–20 mm (0.71–0.79 in) wide, a matching 14th or 15th-century brass belt buckle, and a set of mounting brass rivets. You will thus endow your period belt with an impeccably unified and historically accurate character.
