Gothic Brass Strap End with Acorn, 14th-15th Century

A Jewel of the Late Middle Ages

This strap end is the epitome of High Gothic ornamentation. The upper section, where the belt is inserted, features a decorative border. The central part is pierced in the shape of a Gothic arch, in which a detailed element hangs freely – most often interpreted as an acorn, a symbol of strength and endurance. The bottom tip is adorned with an engraved floral motif. The entire fitting is made of solid brass with a polished finish.

How to Attach the Strap End

The strap end is designed for 25 mm (approx. 1 inch) wide leather belts. It is attached using the three posts on the back, which guarantee a very firm and reliable fitting. We recommend the following procedure:

  1. At the end of your belt, precisely measure and punch three holes corresponding to the layout of the posts on the strap end.
  2. Push the posts through the holes in the leather.
  3. From the back of the belt, place a metal washer (not included) over each post. The washer prevents the rivet from tearing through the leather and distributes the pressure.
  4. Carefully peen the ends of the posts over the washers with a hammer to form a solid rivet head that will securely fasten the strap end.

An Interesting Fact: Thistle or Acorn?

Although some sources refer to the hanging motif as a thistle (a symbol of Scotland), the acorn interpretation is more likely given the London origin of the original find. The acorn has deep roots in English and European symbolism. It represents strength, endurance, and vast potential—from a small acorn grows a mighty oak that can live for hundreds of years. In Gothic art, the oak leaf and acorn were popular decorative motifs and symbols of luck and prosperity.

How to Care for Your Brass Fittings

Brass is a beautiful metal that develops a natural patina over time, which adds to its historical appearance. If you wish to maintain its original bright shine, you can polish it regularly with a soft cloth and a standard brass cleaner. Protect the fitting from contact with harsh chemicals, such as modern leather cleaners, which could damage the metal's surface.
