Up through the 12th century, belt fitting sets consisting of a plate buckle and a matching strap end served not only to cinch garments or suspend a knife and pouch, but functioned primarily as a display of military and social status. Brass casting allowed for intricate openwork patterns that stood out prominently on the belt of a wealthy warrior or burgher.

Mounting and Assembly Instructions

Attaching this belt set to a leather strap is straightforward and easy to accomplish in your workshop:

• Prepare the Leather: Select a quality leather strap up to 24.73 mm (approx. 0.97 in) wide (ideally 22 to 24 mm). Punch a longitudinal slot near the end of the strap for the buckle pin.
• Mount the Buckle: Insert the leather strap into the recessed back of the buckle plate so the pin passes through the punched slot. Integrated brass rivet posts are located on the reverse side of the mount. Press the plate onto the leather, mark the post locations, punch holes, and carefully peen (or bend) the posts on the backside over washers.
• Mount the Strap End: Insert the opposite end of the leather strap into the chape recess, mark the positions for the rivet posts, punch matching holes, and secure the posts on the backside.
• Fastening: Thread the strap end through the D-buckle frame, insert the pin through the desired belt hole, and pull the strap tight.

• Wipe dry with a soft cotton cloth after exposure to rain, moisture, or sweat.
• Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishing pastes, which could strip away the dark antiqued patina highlighting the openwork pattern.
• Exercise caution when peening or bending the rear rivet posts to prevent marring the front face or causing personal injury.
• The pin point is functional – handle with care during assembly and wear.
• Keep out of reach of small children due to sharp rivet posts and small parts.
