Medieval Cutlery Set Mercator – Knife and Fork (Horn / Wood)

Stylish Dining History

This set is perfect for historical reenactment, LARP events, Renaissance fairs, or outdoor camping. It comprises a practical knife and a two-tined fork. Historically, forks were long considered a luxury of the nobility or even "tools of the devil," while common people ate with their hands or spoons. However, in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, similar traveling sets appeared, serving wealthier travelers.

Usage Warning: The blades are made of carbon steel. This means they are prone to rust if not cared for properly. The knife and fork are not stainless steel and are not dishwasher safe! Extreme temperatures and harsh chemicals in a dishwasher would irreversibly destroy both the steel and the natural material handles.

Maintenance and Care

To ensure this set serves you well for many years, please follow these simple rules:

  • Clean the cutlery immediately after each use with lukewarm water and dry it instantly. Do not let it air dry.
  • Regularly preserve the metal parts with edible oil (e.g., vegetable oil) or mineral oil to prevent rusting.
  • If you choose the horn variation, do not expose it to extreme temperature changes or microwaves.
  • Do not store the cutlery in the leather sheath for long periods. Leather is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture) and contains tannins, which can cause rapid corrosion of the metal.

A simple leather scabbard is included free of charge. Please note that the colour and finish of the leather may vary depending on material availability. This item is sold primarily as a historical prop. For legal reasons, we state that this product does not have modern food safety certification, although its materials correspond to historical originals.
