Transport yourself back to a time when the brute force of medieval swords began to blend with the elegance and technical sophistication of the Renaissance. This rapier, dating to approximately 1540, represents an ideal example of a transitional weapon, often referred to as a Side Sword or Spada da Lato. It is a weapon you would have worn at your belt in the streets of Italian cities, ready to defend your honour in a duel, but which would not have failed you in the heat of battle either. Thanks to its craftsmanship and historical accuracy, this piece is a great choice for re-enactment, historical fencing drills, or as the crown jewel of your collection. Rapier Circa 1540 – Early Side Sword with Wire-Wrapped Hilt

Construction and Materials

The blade is hand-forged from high-carbon steel, giving it the necessary flexibility and strength. Unlike later, purely thrust-oriented rapiers, this blade retains enough width for effective cutting. The grip is masterfully wrapped with steel wire, ensuring an uncompromisingly firm hold even in a sweaty palm or while wearing gloves. The complex hilt with guard and finger rings (pas d'ane) protects the hand and allows for advanced gripping techniques with the index finger over the quillon. The package includes a wooden scabbard covered in leather, reinforced at both ends with metal fittings (throat and chape).

Historical Insight: The Birth of the Rapier

The year 1540 is a key milestone. During this time, masters like Achille Marozzo in Bologna were shaping what we know today as modern fencing. Swords were becoming lighter, the point of balance shifted towards the hand, and emphasis was placed on agility and thrusting techniques, although the cutting function was preserved. This sword is a direct reference to this fascinating era when fencing became both a science and an art.

Important Usage Warning

Although the blade is made of quality carbon steel, we sell this rapier primarily as a replica for drills and decoration. Unless explicitly stated that the weapon is intended for full-contact combat, avoid forceful impacts with other steel weapons to prevent damage to the edge. Prioritize safety during practice and use protective gear.

Weapon Care

Carbon steel requires your attention to prevent rusting. Follow these principles:

  • After every use or touch with bare hands, wipe the blade with a dry cloth and oil it (WD-40 or gun oil is suitable).
  • Do not store the sword in the scabbard for long periods in high-humidity environments, as leather can trap moisture against the blade.
  • Occasionally check the wire wrapping of the handle and keep it clean.
