Low Scottish Leather Ghillie Shoes with Rubber Sole
Historical Design Born in the Scottish Highlands
Why do these shoes lack a tongue? This is not a manufacturing flaw, but an absolutely ingenious historical invention! The original inhabitants of the Scottish Highlands constantly waded through deep bogs, streams, and moorland on their journeys. The tongueless construction of the shoe, where the leather over the instep is simply drawn together with laces, allowed water to drain immediately upon emerging from a bog, enabling the footwear to dry quickly. Furthermore, the long laces were traditionally tied high above the ankle to keep them out of the mud. Today, Ghillie-style shoes are an essential component of traditional Scottish Highland dress and are worn almost exclusively with a kilt.

How to Properly Care for Your Celtic Shoes
Leather is a living natural material that requires your regular attention to maintain its flexibility and longevity. Straight from production, the footwear is treated with a beeswax leather balm. Regularly rub a high-quality wax balm or leather oil into the leather. This will nourish and waterproof the material. Bear in mind that the leather will darken slightly after the application of these products, which gives it a beautiful patina. If you soak the footwear, always let it dry slowly at room temperature. Under no circumstances should you dry the shoes near an open fire, on a hot radiator, or in direct sunlight – the leather would irreparably stiffen and crack.
If you choose shoes in a colour other than the basic shade, please be aware that these colours are achieved by applying a special covering paint. Over time, the lacquered layer may crack or flake slightly in areas subjected to bending stress. For occasional wear (e.g., a few events a year), this is perfectly fine, but for extreme and daily use, we highly recommend the natural leather shades.
Safe Wear and Ordering Tips
Thanks to the modern rubber sole, these shoes will offer you excellent grip on grass, cobblestones, and in mild mud, which you will appreciate especially when dancing or on long LARP marches. If you wear orthotic insoles and opt for our custom-made footwear production, it is essential that you physically post these insoles to us. The shoes will then be sewn precisely so that the insoles fit perfectly and ensure your maximum comfort.
To accompany these stylish shoes, we strongly recommend you purchase a traditional Scottish kilt and thick woollen kilt hose from our range, thereby bringing your period outfit to absolute perfection.
