Medieval Leather Ankle Boots with Lacing – 13th & 14th Century
Classic Construction and Natural Materials
The foundation of these boots is high-quality natural cowhide. The upper is made of leather approximately 1 mm thick, ensuring the boot quickly adapts to the shape of your foot without pinching. The construction stays true to historical methods – the sole is made of 3 mm thick hardened leather and is attached to the upper around the perimeter with sturdy steel nails. This method ensures a durable joint without disrupting the elegant and simple appearance of the boot.
The front lacing with leather thongs allows for tight fastening around the instep and ankle, so the boot stays stable on your foot even when running or fighting. To increase durability, an additional leather patch is sewn inside the heel area to prevent the lining from wearing out in this high-stress spot.
Historical Context
In the High and Late Middle Ages, laced ankle footwear was a common standard. While the nobility began experimenting with extremely long toes (poulaines) in the 14th century, commoners and soldiers preferred more practical shapes with a slightly extended toe, exactly as found on this model. The smooth leather sole allowed for good ground feel and natural movement, which was appreciated by both city craftsmen and light infantry.

Important Note: Smooth Leather Sole
These boots feature an authentic smooth leather sole. This is excellent for historical accuracy and movement on grass or packed earth, but on modern smooth surfaces (tiles, asphalt, hardwood floors), the boots can be slippery. If you plan to wear the boots often in the city or indoors, we recommend having a cobbler add a thin rubber sole. This will increase safety and extend the life of the leather.
Maintenance and Care
Since this is a natural material dyed using traditional methods, the leather may have small scars or irregularities in colour – this is a sign of authenticity, not a defect. Care for the boots as follows:
- After an event, clean mud from the boots with a damp cloth (not soaking wet).
- Regularly grease the leather with shoe grease or beeswax to keep it soft and water-resistant.
- Never dry the boots near a direct heat source (radiator, fire). Let them dry slowly, preferably stuffed with newspaper, to prevent the leather from cracking.
